We all have our ideas about marriage. Those ideas may differ in different cultures, in different parts of the world. But one thing is consistent and that is the finger in which we wear the wedding ring. Have you wondered why we wear our wedding ring on a specific finger? This video offers a Chinese explanation to the question and it’s absolutely beautiful.
According to the Chinese, the thumb represents your parents. The index finger represents your siblings (if you have any). The middle finger represents yourself. The fourth finger represents your life partner, and the pinky finger represents your children (again if you have any).
The video instructs us to open our palms, face to face. He then touches his middle fingers and bends them backward closing in our hands. The next instruction involves touching the remaining three fingers, and the thumbs together.
He says to separate the thumbs. Remember the thumbs represent our parents. The thumbs will open because our parents are not meant to stay with us forever. They are destined to leave sooner or later.
Next, try to separate your index fingers. These too will open because our siblings will go on to have their individual lives with their families. He joins the index finger and separates the pinky fingers. This pair will also open up for similar reasons. The children will grow, and lead their individual lives creating families for themselves eventually.
Now, close the pinky fingers and try to open the ring fingers. Surprised? You are not able to open this pair of fingers. The Chinese believe that partners are meant to be together all of their lives, through thick and thin, absolutely no separation. Isn’t that lovely?
