When Sander Bakker’s son passed away, he was devastated. No parent is supposed to bury their child. It is not how the circle of life is supposed to work.
His son was born with Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia and succumbed to the condition. Rather than dwell on the awful hand that life had dealt him, however, Bakker decided to turn his grief into something beautiful.
As an artist, he wanted to convey his emotions — but he didn’t want to use words. He wanted to create something that would inspire others and still be a reflection of his son and their time together.

“Without using words, I tried to express my love for my son Nikolaas. The project would be my haven; it would allow me to dwell in the few memories I would have of him, while creating something that he might have loved to gaze at.”

What resulted was a beautiful desk lamp that Bakker believes Nikolaas would have loved. Bakker is now selling replicas of the lamp via his Kickstarter. All proceeds go toward Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia, the condition that Nikolaas suffered from and ultimately succumbed to.

What a beautiful way to honor his son’s memory.
