It is incomprehensible to think of how a parent can hurt a child, but the unfortunate reality is very true. Mom, Amy Owensby, is sharing her story to bring awareness to the danger that happened to her family.
Three years ago, at just 8 months old, Amy’s daughter Cheyenne was shaken by her father so severely that she barely survived. Her skull was fractured and she suffered bleeding on her brain when her father, James Davis Jr., shook her because she wouldn’t stop crying.
Owensby was separated from her husband, but the David Jr., was allowed weekend visits. The extent of Cheyenne’s injuries were so harsh that it was unknown if she would live, nor was Owensby allowed to touch her after the incident.

Little Cheyenne underwent days of surgeries, therapy sessions, court dates and many other challenges. Davis Jr. pled guilty to felony child abuse inflicting great bodily injury, and received a maximum 20-year sentence, suspended upon the service of 10 years and 5 years of probation.

Shaken Baby Syndrome is brain injury that occurs when someone shakes a baby or throws a baby against an object. It is a detrimental form of child abuse. It may happen to children up to 5 years of age, but it is most common in babies younger than 1 year old.
It is never okay to shake or throw a young child. It may not leave any obvious sign of injury, but it can cause serious long-term problems or even death.
