A recent study conducted by researchers, from Northwestern University Fienberg School of Medicine and the Edward Hines Jr. VA Hospital, has found that hearing a familiar voice can help coma patients with recovering their consciousness faster. That would explain one North Carolina mother waking from a coma after hearing her newborn daughter cry.
Shelly Cawley, from Concord in North Carolina, had an emergency C-section but failed to recover from anesthesia for hours after the surgery. She fell into a coma due to a blood clot that broke loose during the operation.
Her husband, Jeremy, 35, recalls a deep sense of despair at the side of his 23-year-old wife’s in the intensive care unit of the hospital. Doctors even told Jeremy there was nothing much that could be done to help his wife. While Shelly was struggling to cling to life, her newborn, Rylan, was thriving at his brand new life.
When hope was almost lost, nurse Ashley Manus at the Carolinas HealthCare System Northeast came up with a suggestion for Shelly to meet her daughter. She thought that Shelly might come around if she heard her baby cry.
Manus said Shelly responded to Rylan’s cry almost immediately. “We could see a spike in her vitals on the monitor. We knew that somewhere in there she was hearing her baby. Rylan saved her mom’s life.”
This is nothing short of a miracle- there is no other way to describe it.
After a week of full recovery from the coma, Mom was able to hold her baby and nurse her.
Amazing!
