Teacher Walks Students Home From School Every Single Day

Jamaica Bravo

The majority of students at Whitney Achievement Elementary School have to walk over a quarter of a mile to get home each day after school. In Memphis, Tennessee, this means trekking over large fields and isolated roads where the kids are easy victims for child predators. Staff at Whitney found this fact disconcerting. So when five teachers realized how many of their students were going home on foot after school, they called a meeting and came up with an easy solution to the problem.

Now, every day, teachers Carl Schneider, Kevin Sullivan, Auriel Rolle-Polk, Allison Thompson, and Valeria Bostick, accompany over 200 students on their journeys home. Parents in the community are so grateful for these teachers who are going above and beyond the call of duty to not only educate their children, but keep them safe, that they began posting pictures of the daily walks on Facebook with messages of thanks to the educators protecting their children after hours.

This gained the group the attention of a news reporter at Fox13 who hosted an interview with the five educators. The head of the team, Carl Schneider, told the Fox reporter that none of them mind the extra chore in the least, in fact, they see it as a blessing! “We can just get to know the kids and talk about what they did over the weekend or how their behavior was at school that day or what they learned.”

Schneider continued to describe how much he loves bonding with his students after school and told the reporter that after three years, he still is not sick of the daily walks. For that matter, he enjoys them so much and thinks they’re so beneficial for his students that he said he never plans to stop!
