For Alan “Beam” Beamer and his wife Mary Beth, their struggle of dealing with Alzheimer’s is a day to day battle. His wife wanted to make a video because she discovered that her husband was living in a lonely world. His heartfelt plea will evoke every emotion.
Beamer, 66, from Big Rapids, Michigan was an educator and athlete before being diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. Now his days are mostly spent with his best friend, Mary Beth, but he wishes things were different. His wife wanted to record a message for the family members and friends who stopped coming to visit Beam. Those who did come would not stay for long because he felt they were uncomfortable being around him. Beam’s wife recorded her husband’s tearful plea and posted it on Facebook.
In the emotional clip, Beam says he knows people are afraid of him now, but he and his wife still love them. He also hopes they would come over and stay for longer periods of time, and stresses that he’s the same person that he was before the diagnosis. The tearful man longs for the days when he and his friends would joke around like they used to.
According to alz.org, Alzheimer’s is a disease which attacks the brain- it is the most common form of dementia which presents itself in the form of memory loss, difficulty thinking and understanding, confusion, inability to create new memories, and forgetfulness among other symptoms.
Beam’s video shows us how people with Alzheimer’s do not want to be treated differently. Just like everyone, they want more love.
