Nightclubs with booming big bands and synchronized chorus line dancers showed off the bustling New York City culture during the Harlem Renaissance. It’s rare to see authentic footage from this time period, but this story brings ‘Soundies’ to life for us all!

These ‘Soundies’ were short musical films, or music videos of their day. One star of these films, Alice Barker, just saw this genuine footage for the first time…ever!

She’s now 102 years old, and shared the stage with legends from the 1930s and 1940s, like Frank Sinatra, Gene Kelly and Bill “Bojangles” Robinson.

Although Barker had performed in numerous movies, TV shows and commercials, she had never seen her dance routines on film. She has lived a long and amazing life, but she was missing the memory of her time on the stage.

Mark Cantor from Jazz-on-film.com realized his old film collection featured one familiar face! He shows Barker the footage, and her face instantly lights up. The technology of today has given her a chance to see things that she never would have been able to before. Amazing!
