What would you do to save the life of a family member? It’s probably not something you ask yourself a lot, but one little girl was forced to answer this question. The story of Julia and what she did to save her family is one of the most extraordinary things I’ve ever heard.
Christy Jenkins has four kids: Will, John, Matthew and Julia. When two of her boys, Will and John, started getting lumps on their lymph nodes, she took them to the doctor and made a horrifying discovery. Her boys suffered from Burkitt’s Lymphoma, a curable but rare form of cancer. Based on genetics, Matthew would probably get it as well. All three boys needed a bone marrow transplant.
Luckily for them, there was someone in their lives that was a perfect match: their sister Julia. She was so young that she didn’t even know what being a bone marrow donor meant but she said yes immediately. Without hesitation she gave her bone marrow to two of her brothers to help rebuild their immune system.
Matthew’s body, however, resisted the transplant, forcing Julia to undergo another treatment which lasted 8 hours. After completion of all treatments, all three boys are healthy and cancer free.
