People of all shapes, color and sizes squeeze next to one another in the tight space, all lost in their hectic lives and drudgery of the world. Some are buried in their newspapers, some drown out sounds with their headphones, and the rest avoid eye contact with the person daydreaming across the way. If you’ve ever taken the NYC subway, you know far too well that sharing kindness or gratitude is the last priority on any commuter’s to-do list.

It looked like your typical NYC subway commute, but one passenger boarded the tightly spaced carrier with the goal of changing a few lives.

A woman stood in the corner with an abundance of colorful roses. When he approached the woman, she informed him they were $1 each, but if he wanted 15 of her roses, he could buy them for $14.

To her surprise, the stranger asked if he could buy them all and said, “It would be $140 for every single one of them, right?”

It took the woman a few moments to realize what he was asking, but when he pulled out his wallet and hands her a wad of cash, it was clear – he wanted every single one of them!

Before she would take his money, he makes her promise to give away each rose away, “just to be nice.”

Overwhelmed with gratitude, she shouts out, “For anybody who wants a rose, you can come and get one.”

It’s not every day a person walks into your life and reminds you why it’s important to be kind to your neighbor. This is a story to remember.
