Getting a cancer diagnosis is one of the hardest things in the world to cope with. This is true for anyone, at any age, no matter the type of cancer, but Allie Allen, has had it particularly rough. In March, her grandfather died from brain cancer, one of the deadliest forms of the disease, and her mother is currently still in the throes of fighting against breast cancer.
On top of all this, at the young age of fourteen, Allie herself was diagnosed with brain cancer as well.
Despite having to wage their own battles against illness, Allie’s family rallied around her, and because it was caught early, her body was miraculously able to fight the cancer off. They thought after that the worst was over. But just recently, Allie’s doctor called to give them another batch of devastating news: her cancer was back, and more aggressive than before.

Now, on top of all the other stressful tasks that Allie has to complete to end her high school career on a high note, like continuing to study for exams, participate in extracurricular activities and begin the lengthy, anxiety-inducing process of applying for colleges, she doesn’t even know if she’ll be alive to attend, she also has to go through chemotherapy.

On the Allen’s GoFundMe page, Allie bravely shares her feelings about the moment she lost all her hair. After a few rounds of chemotherapy, one morning, only a few short weeks before her upcoming High School Homecoming dance, the majority of her hair fell out. It was a Sunday, and she says she woke up to find that she only had about two chunks of hair left. Though many teen girls would have completely freaked out over the fact that this was happening just before the biggest day in their high school social lives, Allie took it as courageously as she’s taken everything else. In a post that showed she hadn’t lost her sense of humor yet, she wittingly wrote “I decided to pull a Britney Spears 2007 and shave my head”.

Her attitude is an inspiration to us all as she continues, saying, “That was very hard for me for me to do but that’s one thing I got over and am not stressing over it anymore. One of these pictures shows my scar. Now everyone can see it, but a scar is a tattoo with a better story, right?”

Since she lost all her hair, many of Allie’s friends have gathered to show her their support. A group of boys from her class took it upon themselves to make sure Allie knew that they still thought she was the most beautiful and amazing girl in the world. They posted a picture of themselves standing somberly in a line on a street in her neighborhood, with the letters of her name painted across their baire chests.

In an even bigger gesture of solidarity, Allie’s best friend, Brayden Carpenter, surprised her by showing up at her house on Homecoming night, ready to take her to the dance, with his own head shaved completely bald.
