Sharonda Ross had noticed something peculiar when she arrived to pick up her 10-month-old son, Jordan, from Joann’s Day Care in Houston, Texas. The parking lot was empty and the lights were off inside the building. When she noticed the doors were locked, she thought her husband may have picked up their boy- that is, until she heard a familiar cry come from inside the daycare center.
Panic began to set in and she called her husband for help. She told KTRK, “We start breaking the glass [window] out. [My husband] goes in and…comes [back] and there’s my baby — just left. Nobody’s here, no cars, no nothing.”
Although Ross did show up to pick up her son 45 minutes after the daycare had closed, she said the daycare had an understanding that she’d pick up her baby late, after her 6pm shift.
The owner of the daycare center, Joann David, told reporters,” “First, I’m deeply, terribly sorry. I thank God he was ok…It was our mistake. I’m not saying it’s not…but the main thing is the baby’s ok, and I’m sorry as I can be.”
The employee who left the baby unattended will apparently not be fired since it was an accident. But Ross has filed a report with the county sheriff’s office who is now investigating the claim of child abandonment.
Ross’s husband tells KTRK, “I just want to know if she can put herself in our shoes. In that moment, it feels like your life is over.”
