Bananas Foster is a splendid dessert with caramelized bananas, completed with vanilla bean ice cream. This scrumptious dish was created in the 1950’s at the famed Brennan’s restaurant in New Orleans. They still serve it to this day. If you had this treat before, or you want to try it for the first time, follow these easy steps to create a mouth-watering delight.
Bananas Foster requires three steps. You have to make the sauce, add the bananas, and flambe. In a saucepan, add two ounces of butter, one third cup of brown sugar, one quarter cup of cinnamon, a pinch of nutmeg, and a pinch of salt. Allow the sugar to melt down over a low heat for maybe five minutes or so. This step requires patience.
This recipe can be made over an electric stove or a gas top stove. To prepare the bananas, you can cut them at an angle, or leave them whole. Make sure the bananas are firm because they soften up in the pan. Add two bananas to the melted sugar and stir until they are fully coated.
The most interesting part of the recipe is the flambe technique. Caution is necessary! You may want to have a fire extinguisher nearby. Add the rum to the pan, and use a lighter to add the fire. Watch it go up! The flambe technique burns out all of the rum, but leaves the spicy flavor.
There are several ways to enjoy Bananas Foster. This specific recipe makes four servings. You can portion out individually, or follow the video and make one giant serving. Place a pint of vanilla bean ice cream in a serving dish and pour the banana mixture from the pan all over the ice cream.
