Summer is a magical time for everyone. Hours of sunshine, family barbecues and sweet frozen treats make those long warm days even better. But with all that summer sun, a frozen treat can turn into a sticky mess in no time.

So, to help you avoid a headache this summer (brain freezes not included) we’ve found this adorable craft from Make It & Love It! In this easy to follow tutorial they show us how to make an ice cream/soda can cozy tote!

For this project you’ll need:

  • Tracing paper
  • Scissors
  • Pencil
  • Ice cream pint
  • Fabric (Two sturdy outer pieces of fabric, two pieces of lining. All 12 x 22 inches)
  • Elastic
  • Sewing kit or machine
  • Iron
  • Buttons
  • Velcro
  • Felt
  • Pins

First, trace the shape of the ice cream pint by rolling it along the paper. Make sure the paper fits all the way around the container.

Next, cut the shape out of the paper. Trim off excess paper, but leave room for seam allowance.

Cut out two pieces of fabric from that shape — one piece of felt and one piece of double sided fusible web.

From there, place the fusible web along the wrong side of the colored fabric; on the side of the fabric you do not want facing outward. The fusible web will be the lining of the cozy. Then put the piece of felt on top of the web and iron the three pieces together.

Then, place the other piece of fabric on top with the right sides together. After that, sew all the pieces together but leave one end open.

Next, trim off each corner and turn the piece right side out and iron.

Now it’s time to add the elastic loops which will be apart of the closure! Take your piece of elastic and make two small loops, making them big enough for a button to fit through. Then, attach the loops to the top layer of fabric ONLY by sewing it on.

Then fold the raw edges into the inside of the cozy and sew it shut and continue sewing all the way around the whole cozy.

Then wrap the cozy around the item you want it to fit and mark where you’ll need the buttons. Then sew the buttons onto the cozy!
