Disneyland is without a doubt one of the most iconic and famous places in the world. You’d be hard pressed to find someone that a) hasn’t heard of Disneyland or b) isn’t dying to go there. This dream destination has the largest cumulative attendance out of any theme park in the world, according to US City Traveler. It’s hosted more than 650 million guests since opening its doors in 1955 and is the second most visited theme park in the whole world.

As most of us already know, Disneyland is the brainchild of Walt Disney. The name kinda gives it away, duh. Walt Disney came up with this brilliant concept after taking his daughters to various theme parks in the 1930s and 40s. In 1953 he bought a plot of land in Anaheim, California and his dream park was underway.

Construction on Disneyland began in 1954 and the park officially opened its doors on July 17, 1955. There was even a special televised event on ABC that debuted the monumental opening. From that day on Disneyland was an instant success and has been the ‘Happiest Place on Earth’ for 60 years.

Much has changed throughout the years at Disneyland but its dreamland appeal remains the same. Watch this rare time-lapse footage of Disneyland being built more than 60 years ago. Keep an eye out for some familiar attractions and ones that have come and gone throughout the years.
