Instead of having to spray yourself, friends and other guests with sticky stinky bug spray, make your own citronella candles at home!
Making these candles is actually very simple. All you need to start are adorable small jars for your candles, candle wax, pre-waxed candle wicks and a glass bowl over a pot of boiling water.
To measure the amount of wax necessary, just pour the wax inside before melting, to know the whereabouts of how far up the jar it will be.
Then, add the water to the pot and keep it on medium heat, and once it’s heated place the bowl on top.
Next, add the candle wax to the bowl and start melting, continuously stirring so it breaks up the substance. If you want a little color to the candles, add wax crayons or you can leave them white if the jars are already vibrant colors.
While the wax is melting, add adhesive so the candle sticks to the bottom of the jars with a small piece of tape folded over to have both side sticky. Once the wax is melted, add in a teaspoon of citronella oil. Be very careful when you take the wax off the heat and pour them into the candle jars. It’s pipin’ hot!
Keeping the wicks of the candles held upright, use a pair of chopsticks and pour the wax into the jars. If some wax runs onto the chopsticks or whatever you are using to keep the wicks up, it can easily be cleaned up once it has dried.
Leave the candles to set and remove the chops sticks, and trim an inch above the candle line. And Voila! Now you are finished with your beautiful homemade citronella candles! These beauties will do wonders for your summer!
