What do kids love? Kids love outer space. Sure, they don’t know the sheer size and scope of it, it’s just bright lights in the sky to them when they’re little. Odds are you even had those awesome glow-in-the-dark star stickers somewhere in your bedroom growing up. You know the ones. You would leave the light on for 30 minutes before bed just so you could see the awesome patterns you made up on the ceiling. Only problem? They will destroy a paint job.
There’s a solution, though. YouTube DIYer, Robert Mahar, has created an amazing, ethereal, glow-in-the-dark star mobile. To achieve this unique look, Mahar uses glow-in-the-dark glue sticks and a hot glue gun. He then purchased star-shaped, silicon baking molds. He even says in the video that you can use other molds, like animals, cowboy hats, pumpkins, etc. You can even spell out a name in the mobile if you want. You call the shots! Just make sure that the molds are designed to withstand high temperatures. The mobile itself is constructed out of silver jewelry wire and white thread. For a more whimsical, magical look, Mahar suggests using fishing line, to make it look like the stars are floating in the air. How cool!
Each mobile is open to improvisation. Mahar’s model uses 15 stars. With that number, you could make your own solar systems and galaxies. The mobile is relatively lightweight and won’t pose any sort of safety hazards. The glue is non-toxic. For a total list of supplies for this awesome DIY, check out this easy to shopping list.
While most of Mahar’s YouTube DIY videos are very detailed and innovative, he explains them in a way that anyone can understand. Don’t be intimidated by a project like this. You can do it! Your kids will thank you. Just hope they don’t stay up too late.
