Most welcome mats are either really ugly, really boring, or really, really cheesy. Seriously, when was the last time someone purchased a “Wipe Your Paws” mat and thought “Wow, I’m super original for buying this”?
Well, regardless, we have a welcome mat that will be sure to make you smile — and not roll your eyes.
To get started on this DIY project, you’ll need the following:
-A rubber door mat
-Decorator-weight fabric of your choice
-Scissors
-Spray adhesive
-A paint brush
-Water-based polyurethane
-Iron
-Ironing board
Cut your mat to the desired size of your choice and then cut your fabric to cover it — leaving about two inches of extra fabric on each side.
Iron your fabric to remove any wrinkles and then spray the adhesive to the smooth side of the mat and place the mat on the fabric. Be sure to remove any air bubbles or wrinkles.
Using your adhesive spray, cover the edges of the fabric and then gently fold it over onto the mat.
Cover your mat with two or three layers of polyurethane. Remember to wait two hours or so in-between each coat.
That’s it! Enjoy — and be sure to not snark too much on your neighbors’ ugly door mats.
