If you’re a dog owner, you know that your dog can get into some questionable things. Whether it be something you left on the counter or maybe even in the trash. In this case, a black lab from Pennsylvania had been eating things a bit stranger than that and his owners would only come to find out once they took him in for surgery.
When this family brought their dog, Tiki, to the local veterinarian for surgery, they never expected that they’d find what they did. The surgeon said that performing surgery on the dog was like a magic trick where a magician keeps puling scarves out of a hat.
While conducting surgery they found: four rubber bands, one Band-Aid, eight pairs of underwear and 62 hair bands. We’ve all experienced hair bands going missing but our first thought usually isn’t our dog.
It is believed that this happened due to a disorder called “pica” that usually occurs due to boredom. Pica is the constant eating of substances that are not edible and provide no nutrition. Another cause of pica is a lack of nutrition in your pet’s diet.
In order to keep your pet from eating random non-food items, ASPCA suggests that you keep non-edible items away from your pet’s sight and out of their reach. It is also suggested that you discourage them verbally when you see that they’re trying to chew on a non-food item. However, praise them when they do the right thing and turn to their chew toys instead.
I hope this inspires you to keep your pet healthy and well fed, that way you won’t be making any surprise trips to the vet anytime soon!
