As humans, we like to believe we’re the smartest creatures in the world. But it’s videos like this one that make us wonder just how much?
At the New York Aquarium, Presley the dolphin is known for being one of their smartest sea creatures in their facility. It not uncommon for him to play with spectators as they watch in awe, spinning and twirling in the water to give them a show. But trained staff decided to test his skills to prove just how clever he really was.
Watch as Presley swims up to the mirror. He begins to make deliberate movements to test whether or not the reflection is following along. It doesn’t take long before he notices a familiar face responding to his movement. Once he realizes who it really is, he begins to move and shake in excitement- just like a child!
The ability for dolphins to recognize themselves in a mirror indicates that they possess self-awareness, something very few animals possess. Self-awareness is thought to be a precursor to advanced thinking processes normally associated with humans.
So turns out, we’re not the only animals who are miraculously intelligent. So too are our fun-loving sea friends, the dolphin!
