Canadian model Elizaveta Bulokhova was just 24-years-old when she began experiencing a horrendous toothache while vacationing with her husband in Amsterdam. Thinking nothing of it, she ignored it as best she could until her husband, Roman Troubetskoi, insisted that she visit the doctor.

Tragically, Elizaveta’s life was turned upside down when the doctors informed her that her pain was not the result of a toothache, but rather, jaw cancer. Adding insult to injury, Elizaveta was pregnant.

Devastated, she felt completely lost but knew that she had to fight the disease. Her doctors, however, told the Latvian born model that if she wished to fight the disease with chemotherapy, that Elizaveta would have to have an abortion. The model was once again inconsolable. How could this be happening?

Bulokhova spoke to Vice about the traumatic experience, saying “He was very active and I would talk to him often while he was in my womb…I had to tell him to stop moving because I couldn’t keep him and then all of a sudden he did. He listened; he stopped moving.” But, he did not stop moving forever.

Before undergoing the abortion, Elizaveta sought out different doctors in search of a second opinion and in meeting with new specialists, learned that terminating her pregnancy was not the only option. Instead, Elizaveta delivered the baby, a healthy son named Valintin, 10 weeks early.

Following the birth, Elizaveta underwent chemotherapy and had 95 percent of her jaw removed. She recently posed for Vice and opened up about her recovery. This family is well on their way living happily ever after, all because one mother was able to defy all odds. We salute you, Elizaveta Bulokhova.
