Grandfather Builds Epic 3-Story, 40Ft Treehouse For His Grandkids

Jay Hewitt, a talented wood-worker who lives in Attleboro, Massachusetts, had a dream of building an epic treehouse for his grandchildren. Growing up as a boy, he had built himself a little treehouse in his own backyard, but his father hadn’t been an experienced contractor like Jay Hewitt is now, so what they had come up with back then had just been “basically a 4-by-8 sheet of plywood”. That sheet of plywood laid in a giant oak tree had provided his friends and he hours of excitement over the summer months, however, and he wanted that for his soon-to-be grandkids as well.

Before they were born, he told their mother, “You’ve never seen a treehouse like the one I’m gonna build for them!” and then set out to build the best house he could imagine in the oak tree in their backyard. When he began, even he, had no idea how big and intricate of a house he would end up building.

In the end, what he created, was more like a mansion in a tree than a simple clubhouse. Take a look at some of the amazing pictures of the multi-leveled tree-house, which altogether is about 780 square feet, the size of an entire apartment, complete with a veranda, wooden staircase, and twisting park-style slide. Most of the items he used in its construction were repurposed. He found them for free at junkyards or made them himself out of birch trees from his own father’s property in New Hampshire.

Hewitt’s five-year-old grandson, Jacob, and his four-year-old granddaughter, Kayla, have enjoyed using the treehouse as their grandfather developed it. Though the treehouse is already larger than any other that we have ever seen, Hewitt says he’s not done with it. He has plans to add a deck on top of the roof for stargazing and an airborne walkway leading to another deck located in a second tree, twenty feet away from the first.
