“Dancing with the Stars'” contestant Michael Sam is known for his blossoming football career, but even better known for being the first openly gay football player in the NFL.

In August of 2013, Michael came out to the public, marking a proud moment in the history of America. But there were those who had a different opinion about his announcement, most importantly, his father.

Shortly after Michael made his sexual orientation know, his father responded to The New York Times with comments like, “I don’t want my grandkids being raised in that type of environment.”

Ever since the interview, Michael’s father cut all ties with the football star.

Using the widely viewed dancing show as an outlet to spread awareness, Michael performs to a song about a father who won’t accept his son. He hopes to bring attention to the sad fact that many parents cannot accept their children the way they are. And who knows, maybe even give someone the strength to come out and not be afraid to be who they are.

His brave act to change the minds of these parents is truly inspiration.
