The power of transformation is miraculous whether it involves human or animal. A foal found dying on the side of the road was recently crowned the RSPCA’s rescue horse of the year.

Piebald colt Gizmo was abandoned in Halstead, Essex, unable to stand with no mother in sight. But after insurmountable odds, the pony made a winning debut in the show ring at Equifest in August.

Gizmo was found aged just four months old, riddled with lice, hypothermic, dehydrated and suffering from pneumonia.

He was taken into the care of Catley Cross Veterinary Clinic, where he received round the clock care from a medical team. His story is such an inspiration that the clinic received donations from people around the world. He has since grown stronger and was permanently adopted by the Halstead veterinary hospital.

Gizmo won both his youngstock RSPCA class and the championship at Equifest—one of the largest horse events on an equestrian calendar.

Carolyn Wyse, veterinary surgeon at Catley Cross Veterinary Clinic, said, “We still can’t quite believe it’s happened. He was so good. We didn’t even think he would win his class, let alone win the championship.”

It was an emotional win for the caretakers of Gizmo which saw his transformation from such a dire state to champion. Gizmo had a huge fan base at the show and enjoyed lots of fuss from his supporters.
