Here’s How To Truly Make Sure No One Ever Finds Your Spare Key

Jamaica Bravo

There’s nothing more annoying than getting locked out of your own home when you’re in a rush! Except, perhaps, searching for your spare hide-a-key only to find that someone else found it first…Think this will never happen to you? Think again.

Many people who hide their spare keys under the mat, over the door frame or in hide-a-rock’s find that these obvious places make discovering the spare key an easy task for a crafty burglar. Those hide-a-rocks look so fake, it doesn’t take a rocket-scientist to pick it out, even if you hide it “less obviously” among real rocks nearby.

Well we have the perfect solution for you — a real-looking rock that will conceal your key completely convincingly! The best part is that you can make it yourself from home.

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Your spare key
  • Disposable cups
  • Oil spray
  • Cling wrap
  • At least one latex glove
  • Water
  • Concrete sealer
  • A paintbrush
  • Concrete mix

To make your real-looking hide-a-key rock:

Cut yourself a foot-long piece of plastic wrap and lay it on the counter

Spray the top of the plastic wrap and both sides of your key with the cooking oil

Next, follow the directions that accompany your concrete mix to form a rock-like lump of clay

After molding your clay into a lump that resembles a rock you might find outside, press it on top of the key and plastic wrap so that the key sinks deep inside. (We recommend pushing your key into the concrete a little farther than the person does in the video, so that it won’t fall out easily and is also better concealed).

Fold the plastic wrap around the “rock” and leave it to dry for a day or two.

After the concrete has dried, unwrap it, and gently tap the rock against something hard outside to make your key fall out.

Paint the rock with the concrete sealer.

After your rock has dried, your key should fit back inside it’s perfectly-shaped key hole nicely.

Stick your rock outside near a bush or other rocks so that it blends in and isn’t easy to spot.
