Fulfilling the wishes of the dying can feel like a small blessing. For one 80-year-old cancer patient who devoted his life to breeding horses, his last wish was granted when his favorite animal was brought to his hospital bedside.
Frank Keat, an equestrian who owned thousands of horses, wanted to visit the stables where he worked for some 65 years one last time. Unfortunately, he was too frail to leave his hospital bed after being treated for cancer. So his nurses arranged for his relatives to bring his five-year-old horse Early Morn to the hospital, after which they took Keat outside for a touching reunion.
Nurses set up the encounter after Keat had entertained them with stories about his career as a breeder, huntsman and judge of equestrian competitions during his month in the hospital. The lover of horses lived in Cornwall and was well respected in local equestrian circles. During the course of his life, he owned many different horses but had to get rid of all except Early Morn because he was no longer able to cope.

Staff Nurse Samantha Russell said she was deeply moved by the event, adding, “I can honestly say that this is the most memorable day of my career.” The nurses had to wheel Keat on his bed out on to the patio to reunite the owner with his thoroughbred. Sadly, days later he lost his battle with cancer.
