With the proliferation of plastic alternatives to hard currency, some people consider carrying cash a throwback. After all, plastic is much more convenient. Consumers love plastic because it simplifies the process at checkout. Unfortunately, there are those vile people in the wait ready to steal your information to cause harm. Youtube Mark Rober shows us just how easy it is with a simple device.
Thieves are now using simplified technologically savvy ways to steal your ATM pin codes or find out which numbers you pressed on many keypads. All they need is an iPhone case that shows infrared. Rober explains the FLIR iPhone case has an infrared camera that picks up thermal heat signatures. When you press the buttons on a keypad to enter your debit card PIN, for example, your fingers leave behind a “thermal signature” for the thieves to pick up with the camera.
You might be thinking how does that harm me? These modern con artists can use scanners to steal credit cards’ and debit cards’ information via their RFID or NFC chips and we know the repercussions of that. But there is a solution to the problem. Rest your fingers on the other buttons while you punch in the other numbers. That will offer a distorted image of heat.
