Judge Sentences East Texas Man to Get Married or Face Jail Time

Angela Markus

Jail or Marriage was the unusual choice handed down to Josten Bundy by a Smith County Texas Judge. Bundy was arrested in March and charged with assault causing bodily injury of his girlfriend, Elizabeth Hannah Jaynes, ex-boyfriend.

Although the charge was a misdemeanor, if Bundy chose the jail option, he would have been forced to spend 15 days behind bars. Instead, the 20-year-old opted to marry his girlfriend.

The terms of the deal made between the judge and Bundy were to marry Jaynes within 30 days, go to counseling, and write scripture from the Bible. But, not everyone was happy about the verdict. The father of the bride, Kenneth Jaynes, was very upset with the judge.

He said to local news, “He can’t do this by court ordering somebody to be married. I contacted a couple of lawyers but they told me someone was trying to pull my leg…that judges don’t court order somebody to get married.”

Elizabeth was not too happy about the judgment either. Clearly, this was not the wedding the 19-year-old had dreamed of having.

What did Josten think about this whole ordeal? For him, a jail sentence would have jeopardized his job. He said, “I just wonder what would have happened if Hannah said no, had we said, ‘you know judge, we would like to get married on our own terms.’”

Lawyer Blake Bailey stated that the ruling was unheard of and could have been shut down with an appeal. Is it me, or is the type of stuff we only hear in Texas!
