In this day and age we’re all a little guilty of being attached to our phones. Some might say this addiction to technology is borderline unhealthy. For the man in this video, his tech obsession is on a completely different level.

This Redondo Beach, Calif. man was enjoying a day out on the water. While he was out on his boat he was looking down at his phone, presumably checking how many ‘likes’ his latest Instagram post got, and COMPLETELY missed the experience of a lifetime.

As he was looking down, a humpback whale surfaced a mere FEET away from his boat. The poor man never took his eyes off his phone so he totally MISSED this once-in-a-lifetime sighting!

Eric Smith, a photographer who saw the whole thing go down while he was on a whale-watching excursion said, “A small private sailboat maneuvered really close to the whales, and this guy on it was literally sitting in that position and never moved … I thought it sucked that he missed such a wonderful moment happening just two feet in front of him.”

I feel bad for the man that missed such a beautiful moment, but this does beg the question: are we so engulfed in our smartphones that we’re missing beautiful moments happening in real-life around us?
