Community Pays Tribute To The Two Who Lost Their Lives in The Lafayette Theater Shooting

Genevieve Lopez

Last night, couples, friends, and families gathered at The Grand Theater in Lafayette, Louisiana to watch the screening of the romantic comedy Trainwreck. They had no idea it would be a night they’d never forget…

20 minutes into the showing, 59-year-old John Russel stood up from the front row, turned around and opened fire.

Amongst the many that had been shot, two women were killed, 21-year-old Mayci Breaux and 33-year-old Jillian Johnson. John proceeded to become lost in the frantic crowd, but it wasn’t long until he turned the gun on himself to commit suicide.

Jillian Johnson leaves behind a daughter, and a loving husband and business partner, Jason Brown. The two ran a local gift shop together called The Red Arrow and a local clothing store called Parish Ink.

Brown wrote a touching message on his Facebook page Friday morning: “Our hearts are shattered. We will love you forever. She was a once-in-a-lifetime gal. A mother, daughter, sister and a truly exceptional wife. She was an artist, a musician, an entrepreneur and a true renaissance woman. She was the love of my life and I will miss her always.”

Mayci  Breaux’s dad told Daily News, “How could someone do that to her?” and was unable to talk further. She leaves behind her loving family and her childhood friend and boyfriend, Matthew Rodriguez. The two planned on getting married after her graduation in 2017 and raising a family together.

Breax's mother said her daughter dreamed of getting married after she graduated from college in 2017, and starting a family with her childhood friend Matthew Rodriguez

Mayci worked at a local clothing store called Coco Eros. The owners of the store posted a message for her in tribute: ” Nothing ever prepares you for a loss… Much less the loss of such an amazing young woman. We are deeply saddened by this loss. Many of you had come to know and love Mayci and we ask that you pray for her family and friends during this tragic time.”

In honor of her passing, the store was closed for the day and asked shoppers to send prayers their way.

Mayci’s mom tells Daily Mail that she lost her best friend. “I didn’t believe it. I lost one of my best friends.”
