A family was driving down the highway when they noticed a little girl, bare-foot and distressed, waving her hands on the side of the road. They stopped immediately. Five-year-old Lexi had climbed up the hill from her family’s overturned vehicle where her mother and infant brother remained.
Angela Shymanski had fallen asleep at the wheel. In the backseat was her daughter Lexi and her newborn baby boy.
Immediately after the crash, Lexi regained consciousness because of the crying of her little brother. Her mother was still unresponsive. That’s when Lexi knew she needed to call for help.

Fortunately, Lexi only suffered minor injuries and managed to unlock her five-point harness and escape her car seat. The family she waved down went to retrieve the baby and waited for paramedics to arrive for Angela.
Angela tells CBC News what her daughter had told her. “I said ‘Lexi, what made you do that?’ And she said, ‘I thought what would mommy say if she was awake? Mommy would say, go get help.’ And so she got help.”
According to Liftbump, the paramedics and firefighters who arrived at the scene had to use ropes to get up and down the embankment.

Angela still can’t believe her five-year-old daughter was able to do accomplish the unthinkable, barefoot and all.
Needless to say, she is beyond proud of her. We are too…

To support the family, the Shymanski’s have set up a GoFundMe account to help pay for the families medical expenses.
