Woman Behind The Magic Yarn Wigs Needs Your Help To Become a Nonprofit

Genevieve Lopez

What did you do today? Did you change a life? Did you make a difference with your service? That’s how former cancer nurse, Holly Christensen, spent her day making lives better- with her amazing skill and generous compassion.

Upon discovering that her best friend’s 3-year-old daughter was diagnosed with cancer, she decided to go back to helping people suffering from the disease. But she didn’t go back to the hospital. Instead, she went to her local arts store and bought an abundance of bright yellow yarn.

She then went home and made a long braided Rapunzel wig embellished with colorful flowers especially for her friend’s little girl to wear throughout her chemotherapy sessions.

Such a kind gesture made the little girl’s day and it didn’t take long before others started placing order with Holly. Soon, The Magic Yarn Project became the greatest thing to happen to children wigs.

“While not the most severe of side effects, hair loss can still be very difficult for cancer patients — especially for little girls — and chemotherapy treatments often leave patients’ bare scalps too sensitive for traditional wigs,” Holly wrote on the project’s website. “To create head coverings for little cancer patients that are both comfortable and whimsical, Magic Yarn volunteers crochet soft yarn into beanies and then transform them into long, beautiful princess hair.”

Thanks to a GoFunMe page, all the wigs are free for the participants. From Frozen’s Elsa wigs to The Little Mermaid’s Ariel wigs, these little girls embrace the spirit of the project’s intent all while looking fabulous, something Holly promises to keep if she manages to raise 20,000 to turn her simple idea into a nonprofit.

“Magic is something you make!” she assures.
