It is an unfortunate story that we hear all too often—drunk drivers taking the lives of innocent people on the road. One mother lost her entire family, and on one of the toughest days she will ever have to endure, she posts the most touching tribute.

Parents should never have to bury their children. Instead of enjoying 10 years together, the couple celebrated their anniversary by choosing caskets for their three children. Jennifer Neville-Lake lost her children and their grandfather when a drunk driver crashed into them.

Daniel Neville-Lake, 9, his little brother Harry, 5, their sister Milly, 2, and their 65-year-old grandfather, Gary Neville, were killed when the van they were riding was struck by an SUV in Vaughan, Ontario. The driver of the SUV, Marco Muzzo, 29, was arrested at the scene.

Neville-Lake says she learned about the crash via television when she saw a clip of their minivan on television; she knew something was wrong. She told the local news, “It’s like the worst nightmare, as a daughter, as a parent, to have to go through. It was caused by someone’s stupidity. It kills me.”

On the day that she would put her children to rest, the mother posted a video to social media of her three children rehearsing for a dance they had planned to perform on their parents’ anniversary. No one should have to go through such devastating heartache.

The family is channeling their grief into activism. They are launching a petition for harsher penalties for those who choose to drink and drive.

“As concerned citizens we are calling on all policy makers and people of influence to ensure that a small measure of justice is served to the Neville-Lake family on behalf of the incomprehensible losses they have suffered,” the petition said.

Muzzo will appear in court next on Nov. 12, according to CBC. Our hearts and prayers go out to this family during this difficult time.
