This Father With Terminal Cancer Leaves Behind Inspiring Notes on Napkins For His Daughter

Angela Markus

Fathers and their daughters share an enviable bond that no other relationships can match. They are practically inseparable, and their love only grows stronger with time.

Some say that “Fathers can’t express their feelings out loud.” This belief can be confuted with many daughters out there. Their inside jokes and understanding for each other makes them absolutely adorable.

When Garth Callaghan was diagnosed with a life threatening illness, what he feared most was that he would not be around for his daughter.

Knowing that his time was limited, Callaghan began to create something that would last even after he was gone. He plans on writing his daughter 826 notes, one for each day until his 14-year-old Emma graduates from high school. Callaghan has been diagnosed with kidney cancer, and he is not sure how long he has to live.

The loving Glen Allen, Virginia father shared some of his notes online. He has a website where he encourages people to “Pack. Write. Connect.” He blogs there and posts the notes on different social media sites. In September, he published a Kindle eBook of quotes he has written on napkins for Emma.

His courageous efforts have inspired other parents and garnered messages of support, according to his blog. But the notes also inspired someone very special to Callaghan—his daughter Emma, who wrote her dad his first note. She wrote, “If my friends really did jump off a cliff, it’s because it was my idea,” Emma had written. “Sincerely, your daughter is a leader, not a follower.

P.S. I think you used all the napkins.”
