We all know stories about buried treasure, hidden deep within caves or on concealed in the sand of a deserted island.
But, have you ever heard a story about hidden treasure being buried in your very own furniture?
Emil Knodell, a retired marketing director from Bellville, Texas, loves to buy antiques. Recently, at an estate sale in Missouri City, Emil stumbled upon what he thought was a just beautiful piece of furniture to add to his growing collection.
However, when he and a staff person tried to load the drawers into the back of his truck, they heard metal rattling around.
“He asked for help loading it. As soon as we laid it down, it started making all this racket on the inside. Obviously we were very intrigued with what was happening with the dresser. There were rings, diamonds, gold and all kinds of stuff. It was a real adrenaline rush. Both of us were in shock for a second,” said Jeff Allen, who works for the Premiere Estate Sales Network.
What appeared to be a normal dresser actually contained a secret compartment. What did they find when they opened it up?
They found a treasure trove of history. Currency, old diamond jewelry, military dog tags and Civil War memorabilia!
While the discovery had the potential to be worth thousands, Emil had no desire to keep the findings.
“I bought the chest drawers. I didn’t buy those things. If I kept them, I would never feel right about it,” Knodell said. “I’m an old ex-Marine and I try to do the right thing.”
They contacted the executor of the state, the son of the man who died, and returned it all to him.
What an amazing discovery and i’m so glad his son got it back!
