You know that moment, when you have all the ingredients ready for cooking something amazing, only to realize that you forgot to leave the butter out to soften? Now, it’s too late; you’re already running out of time, after rushing around after your kids all day…so what do you do?! Well, the answer isn’t scream or cry, like it might have been before this video came out, because thanks to the host of America’s Test Kitchen, John “Doc” Willoughby, we just discovered some great last minute solutions, that don’t involve having a breakdown!
He shows us two ways. If you have a little time, you can cut your stick of butter up into small pieces, spread it out over a plate, and that will allow it to soften more quickly. But that still requires a little bit of time.
So what if you need the butter softened right then?! As Doc shows us, all we have to do is stick the butter in a plastic Ziplock freezer bag, then take a rolling pin and beat the bag of butter. If you don’t own a rolling pin, you can also use a wooden dowel, just be careful not to burst the plastic baggy! In just under a few seconds, you’ll have softened, room temperature butter and you’ll be able to continue cooking without a care in the world. Thanks, Doc!
