“I get to burn their house down,” Diena Thompson said according to News4Jax. “I am the big bad wolf this time, knocking down your door.”
In October 2009 Diena Thompson got the news that is every parent’s worst nightmare. Somer her seven-year-old daughter was sadly taken from this world too soon.
Her daughter vanished while walking home from school one day in October. She was lured into a home where a man named Jared Harrell was squatting. The then 25-year old Harrell lured Somer into the house and murdered her.
He ended up pleading guilty to kidnapping, murder, as well as other charges in 2012. Harrell being brought to justice could never mend a mother’s broken heart though. Ever since that terrible day Diena has been beside herself. But finally, in February 2015 she finally got a little peace of mind she deserves.
The house where the horrifying acts occurred was donated to the Somer Thompson Foundation (a charity Diena set up), which sparked a crazy idea in Diena’s head. Instead of holding on to that dreadful place, she decided to burn it. Burn it down to the ground.
So she donated the home to the Orange Park Fire Department to be used for training exercises. Under one condition though – that she be the one to ignite it. Neighbors, firefighters and complete strangers gathered and cheered Diena on as she threw a flare into the window and watched the house ignite into flames.
Although nothing can make up for her devastating loss, hopefully this small act can help put her mind more at ease.
