Ken Broskey has been driving for the taxi service Uber for about five months now. This 70-year-old driver gives an average of 20 rides a day to a variety of people. This sounds like a normal tale until you find out why he’s doing it and how one man changed his life in a way he didn’t expect.
Ken has elevated stage 4 cancer. His doctors gave him 2-10 weeks to live. They suggested that he go into hospice, but he was uncomfortable leaving his world and his family in debt. So, he became an Uber driver to pay off the house that he, his daughter and his grandchildren live in.
“If I could be in my deathbed knowing that my daughter is taken care of, it’d make dying much easier,” Broskey said.
Recently, he took 22-year-old Roland Gainer for a ride and told him his story. Gainer was instantly compelled to help. Gainer said that Broskey’s story reminded him of his own mother’s battle with cancer. He decided to change Broskey’s fate, as much as he could.
Gainer set up a GoFundMe for Broskey and within seven days, they raised over $100,000 for his house. Uber heard about the story and promised to donate $1 for every ride that used the code UberPartnerKen. Now, Broskey can rest knowing that his family is taken care of, even though he will be gone.
