Learn How To Wind Your Yarn– The Easy Way!

For some knitting lovers, it first starts by collecting a little basket full of yarn that hangs out in your living room. Then as the love of the craft grows, so does the yarn collection. Before you know it, the producers of Hoarders are calling you at home, begging to feature your yarn stash on the show.

Ok, maybe not, but if you have graduated from the basket of yarn, this tutorial is perfect for you. No need to buy a ball winder, follow along to perfect winding a center-pull ball of yarn.

This tutorial takes simple to another level. All you need is a paper towel roll that you will need to cut to ⅓ of its size. Next, cut ¼ inch into one end of the roll. Then tie a knot on one end of the yarn, and then put the knot through the cut you made.

Slide your thumb inside the roll, and hold the yarn in place with your finger. Begin winding your yarn about three times around the roll. Tug gently on the yarn, and let the roll rotate with your thumb. Allow it to make about ¼ turn, and then wind diagonally three more times.

Now you need to tug and wind, several times. Continue in this manner until done. Once you get accustomed to the technique, you will find that the roll moves easily in your hand. Although it may seem awkward at first, it becomes very easy.

Tuck the end of the yarn under a couple of strands to secure it, but do not hide it. Then remove the knot from the cut at the end of the roll and carefully slide the ball from the cardboard.

Flatten the sides of the ball to ease the tension on your yarn. Finally tuck the center yarn end inside the ball. Leave the knot out so the center will be easy to locate.
